Local marketing

100 local customers beat 10,000 random visitors (UK)

UK local businesses grow faster with a hundred nearby customers who can rebook than with ten thousand website visitors from the wrong postcodes.

Website traffic is easy to inflate. A blog post or broad ad campaign can bring thousands of sessions from people who will never visit your shop in Manchester or book your electrician in Cardiff. Local businesses win on repeat business within a short drive, not on national page views.

One hundred households in your catchment who know your name beats ten thousand anonymous clicks from Edinburgh when you only serve Glamorgan.

Why traffic misleads

Analytics dashboards reward volume. Agencies report sessions and bounce rate. None of that pays wages if the visitor is three counties away or just browsing.

Measure:

  • Calls from target postcodes
  • Bookings and average job value
  • Repeat rate within six months

Build a local list, not a funnel fantasy

Leaflets, van signage, sponsorship at a local club, and QR offers on A5 print all target people who could return next month. Search and social can supplement, but the core asset is neighbourhood awareness.

See customers within five miles for radius thinking.

Quality changes offer design

When you market locally, offers can be specific: "Bristol BS3 loft conversion quote" lands better than "best builder UK." Specificity filters waste and builds trust.

National awards and generic superlatives do not move someone on your high street. A named estate, a named offer, and a phone number they recognise do.

Reallocate budget deliberately

If half your ad spend reaches postcodes you decline, cut it and print instead.

Hair salons, accountants, and tyre shops all share the same maths. Ten loyal locals who rebook beat a viral post seen by ten thousand people who live too far away to ever pay you.

Run a quarterly "local only" review of marketing: list every channel, estimate geography, kill what leaks outside your radius.

Charity runs, sponsor boards, and parish newsletters are underrated for trades with strong word of mouth. They anchor you to a place before anyone opens a search tab.
